Maaike Beckmann is a criminologist and doctoral researcher affiliated to the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Universiteit van Groningen. She was awarded the Jeanine Segers Prize for best master’s thesis in criminology for her empirically based thesis describing the masculinity narratives of long-term Belgian male prisoners. In 2013 she collected qualitative data on exhibiting masculinities in a custodial setting. She is currently pursuing her PhD Degree under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Kristel Beyens (VUB) and Prof. Dr. Miranda Boone (RUG). The doctorate is jointly awarded by partner universities Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Universiteit van Groningen. Her dissertation comparatively studies conditional release in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Her research interests include decision-making in sentence implementation, subjective experiences of punishment, comparative criminal justice and penology and communicative theories.
