Tom Bauwens is a postdoctoral researcher. His research interests and teaching experience focuses on the local governance of security, anti-social behaviour policies and the administrative approach of crime.
He worked on a policy supporting research project regarding ‘integrated local safety and security policy’ in Belgium. In 2010, he became a fellow of the Flanders Research Foundation (FWO) and wrote his doctoral dissertation about the role of the mayor in the local governance of security: an interpretative inquiry into how Flemish mayors ascribe meaning to the contested concept of security. He is currently affiliated with the strategic research program “Crossing Borders”. Since 2015, he also works as a policy advisor for a local municipality in Brussels.

Current teaching:
Publiek management en beleid in de strafrechtelijke keten (Management and Policy in the Judicial chain); Gastdocent omtrent verschillende onderwerpen gerelateerd aan lokaal veiligheidsbeleid (Guest lecturer on various topics related to local governance of security); Onderwijsassistent ‘Theoretische Criminologie en Victimology’ (Teaching assistent for the course ‘Theoretical criminology and victimology’)
